The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain warning for Punjab and Uttarakhand, even as the monsoon season begins to withdraw. Residents are advised to prepare for possible flooding and travel disruptions.
The IMD's warning covers several districts in both states, forecasting rainfall exceeding 100 mm in some areas over the next 24 hours. Officials have urged people to avoid unnecessary travel and stay updated through local alerts.
Meteorologists note that although the monsoon is retreating from northwest India, localized weather systems can still trigger intense showers. This phenomenon is not uncommon during the withdrawal phase when residual moisture interacts with western disturbances.
State disaster management teams have been placed on alert, with relief shelters readied in vulnerable zones. Authorities are also checking drainage systems in urban centres like Ludhiana, Amritsar, Dehradun and Haridwar to mitigate waterlogging risks.
