The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rain alert for more than 21 states, warning of extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) released a heavy rain alert on Tuesday, signalling the potential for extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning across more than 21 states.
The alert, which is issued when rainfall is expected to exceed 100 mm per hour, indicates that the weather system moving across the country could bring severe weather conditions that may disrupt transport, damage infrastructure and pose safety risks.
States under the alert include Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, West Bengal, Assam, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Goa.
Residents in the affected areas are advised to stay indoors during peak rainfall hours, secure loose objects, and follow local authorities’ instructions. Emergency services are on standby to respond to any incidents caused by the heavy weather.
