IIT Roorkee has successfully increased the supply of drinking water during the lean season in a village in Uttarakhand, effectively doubling the available water for residents.

IIT Roorkee has partnered with local authorities to address the chronic water shortage that affects many villages in Uttarakhand during the lean season. The institute’s engineers designed and installed a water‑management system that has effectively doubled the amount of drinking water available to the village’s residents.

During the lean season, rainfall is minimal and groundwater levels drop, leaving communities dependent on limited sources. The new system captures and stores water more efficiently, ensuring a steadier supply when demand peaks.

The project, which began earlier this year, involved the installation of storage tanks, improved distribution pipelines, and a monitoring framework to manage usage. By optimizing the existing water infrastructure, the initiative has reduced the need for residents to travel long distances for water.

Local officials report that the increased supply has already begun to improve daily life, with households experiencing fewer shortages and better access for irrigation and sanitation. The success of the project may serve as a model for similar interventions across the state.
