The Indian Engineers Institution's Jammu & Kashmir State Council has called for housing designs that can withstand climate impacts and cater to all sections of society in the region.

The Indian Engineers Institution – Jammu & Kashmir State Council (IEI‑JKSC) issued a formal appeal urging policymakers to adopt housing solutions that are both climate‑resilient and inclusive. In its statement, the council highlighted the growing vulnerability of the region’s built environment to extreme weather events, landslides and seismic activity, urging that new constructions incorporate robust design standards.

IEI‑JKSC emphasized that affordable housing must also be accessible to marginalized groups, including low‑income families, persons with disabilities and the elderly. The council recommended integrating local construction practices with modern engineering techniques to reduce environmental impact while ensuring safety.

The call comes ahead of the state government's upcoming housing schemes, and the council has offered technical assistance to help draft guidelines that align with national climate‑adaptation policies. Stakeholders are expected to review the recommendations in the coming weeks.

By stressing both resilience and inclusivity, IEI‑JKSC aims to influence future urban planning in Jammu & Kashmir, seeking to safeguard communities against climate risks while promoting equitable development.
