The Indian Council of Medical Research will establish a high‑altitude medical facility in Himachal Pradesh to serve armed forces personnel and the resident population.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) announced plans to create a dedicated high‑altitude medicine centre in the state of Himachal Pradesh. The facility will focus on research, diagnosis and treatment of ailments that arise at elevations above 2,500 metres, a condition commonly faced by soldiers stationed in mountainous regions.

The centre aims to provide specialized medical support not only to the armed forces deployed in the Himalayas but also to civilian communities living in the high‑altitude districts of Himachal. It will be equipped with modern diagnostic tools, tele‑medicine capabilities and a team of physicians trained in altitude physiology.

ICMR officials said the project will be coordinated with the Ministry of Defence and the state health department to ensure seamless integration with existing healthcare infrastructure. The centre is expected to become operational within the next two years, enhancing medical preparedness for both defence personnel and the local populace.

By establishing this hub, the council hopes to generate region‑specific clinical data, develop preventive protocols and improve overall health outcomes for people exposed to thin air and harsh climatic conditions.
