The International Cricket Council confirmed that the qualifying stage for the 2028 Men's T20 World Cup will take place in Nigeria.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially announced that the qualifying tournament for the 2028 Men's T20 World Cup will be staged in Nigeria. This decision marks the first time the African nation will host a major ICC event, underscoring the board's push to expand cricket's footprint across the continent.
Nigeria's cricket authorities are preparing venues that meet ICC standards, with the Lagos Cricket Oval identified as the primary stadium. While exact dates have not been released, the qualifiers are expected to be held in the latter half of 2027, allowing sufficient time for participating teams to arrange travel and training.
The move is seen as a boost for African cricket, offering emerging teams a chance to compete on neutral ground and gain exposure to higher levels of competition. It also aligns with the ICC's broader strategy to develop the sport in non-traditional markets, potentially inspiring a new generation of players in Nigeria and neighboring countries.
