ICAR's Central Institute of Freshwater Fisheries Research conducted a training program that equips Uttarakhand fish farmers with ornamental fish culture skills, creating fresh livelihood avenues.
The Indian Council of Agricultural Research's Central Institute of Freshwater Fisheries Research (ICAR-CIFRI) held a specialized training session in Barrackpore, West Bengal, aimed at introducing ornamental fish culture to fish farmers in Uttarakhand. The program focused on practical techniques for breeding, rearing and marketing of high‑value ornamental species.
Participants were taught about suitable species such as guppies, tetras and ornamental carps, as well as water quality management, feed formulation and disease control. Experts also highlighted market trends and export opportunities that make ornamental fisheries a lucrative alternative to traditional aquaculture.
ICAR-CIFRI officials said the initiative is expected to diversify income sources for rural households in Uttarakhand, where conventional fish farming faces seasonal constraints. By adopting ornamental fish culture, farmers can tap into domestic and international demand, potentially raising earnings and creating ancillary jobs in hatchery management and supply chains.
The training marks a strategic effort by the Council to promote sustainable aquaculture and generate employment in hill states, aligning with broader government goals of rural livelihood enhancement.
