The Hyderabad Water Supply and Sewerage Board imposed a ₹20,000 penalty on a local firm for using potable water to clean its floors, citing wasteful consumption.

The Hyderabad Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has levied a fine of ₹20,000 against a Hyderabad‑based firm after discovering that the company used drinking‑grade water for floor cleaning. The enforcement action was taken following a routine inspection that revealed the misuse of potable water for non‑consumptive purposes.

HMWSSB officials highlighted that the practice contravenes state guidelines aimed at conserving drinking water, especially in a region that frequently faces water stress. The board reiterated that only water designated for domestic use should be employed for such activities, and that alternative sources like non‑potable or recycled water must be used for cleaning.

The fined firm has been instructed to cease the practice immediately and to adopt approved water‑conservation measures. HMWSSB warned that any repeat violation could attract higher penalties or further legal action, underscoring its commitment to safeguarding the city’s drinking‑water resources.
