The Hirakud Dam in Odisha has opened two more gates to release excess water into the Mahanadi River, following rising water levels.
The Hirakud Dam, the world's longest earthen dam, located on the Mahanadi River near Sambalpur, Odisha, has opened two additional spillway gates to manage rising reservoir levels.
The move follows sustained heavy rainfall in the region, which has pushed the water level above the safe operating limit set by the dam authorities.
Releasing water through the gates is expected to reduce the risk of overtopping and potential downstream flooding in the districts of Sambalpur, Deogarh and Bargarh.
The Odisha Water Resources Department confirmed the gate openings and said the water will be released in a controlled manner to maintain the structural integrity of the dam.
