Following the recent devastation in Nepal, Himachal Pradesh officials are calling for an India‑China early‑warning hotline to mitigate future Himalayan hazards.

Himachal Pradesh's state government has formally requested the establishment of a direct communication line with China to share real‑time data on seismic activity and glacial melt in the Himalayas. The appeal comes in the wake of the severe landslides and floods that struck Nepal, highlighting the trans‑border nature of mountain hazards.

State officials say that an early‑warning system could give both nations critical lead time to evacuate vulnerable communities and mobilise rescue teams. They have approached the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs to initiate talks with their Chinese counterparts.

While the proposal is still in its preliminary stage, experts note that similar hotlines exist between India and neighboring countries for disaster management. The Himachal administration hopes that a dedicated India‑China channel will strengthen cooperation and reduce the human and economic toll of future Himalayan disasters.

The move has drawn attention from security analysts who view it as a confidence‑building measure amid broader geopolitical tensions. However, officials stress that the primary goal is humanitarian – to protect lives in the fragile mountain ecosystem that both nations share.
