On International Literacy Day 2026, Himachal Pradesh will be recognized for attaining 100% literacy, a milestone for the state.
International Literacy Day, observed worldwide on September 8, this year highlights a historic achievement by Himachal Pradesh. The state government will receive a formal honour for reaching complete literacy across its population, a goal set in earlier national education initiatives.
The education department confirmed that the latest household survey shows every adult in the state can read and write in at least one language. This marks Himachal as the first Indian state to claim full literacy since the launch of the National Literacy Mission.
The ceremony, scheduled for the capital Shimla on the day, will be attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Education and representatives of UNESCO. Officials said the accolade underscores the effectiveness of sustained school enrolment drives, adult learning programmes, and community‑based literacy centres.
