The Sukhu-led Himachal Pradesh administration plans to reduce the number of IAS, IPS and IFS positions, aiming to save about ₹200 crore as the state grapples with a fiscal crunch.

The Himachal Pradesh government, headed by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, announced a plan to trim the cadre strength of the Indian Administrative Service, Indian Police Service and Indian Forest Service within the state. The decision comes as the state confronts a severe fiscal deficit and seeks to tighten its expenditure.

According to the administration, cutting a specified number of posts across these three services will generate savings of roughly ₹200 crore in the current financial year. The reduction will be achieved through a combination of non‑renewal of pending appointments and re‑allocation of existing vacancies.

Officials from the state finance and personnel departments are reviewing the posting lists to identify positions that can be eliminated without disrupting essential public‑service functions. The move is part of a broader cost‑containment strategy that includes delaying new projects and rationalising subsidies.

While the government has not disclosed the exact number of posts to be withdrawn, it emphasized that the measure is intended to restore fiscal stability and ensure that essential services continue uninterrupted.
