The Himachal government has formally requested a 90:10 Centre‑state cost sharing arrangement to fund new UDAN regional air routes, aiming to boost tourism and connectivity.
Himachal Pradesh’s administration has submitted a proposal to the Union government seeking a 90:10 cost‑sharing model for the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) regional air connectivity scheme. Under the requested arrangement, the state would contribute 10% of the project outlay while the Centre would fund the remaining 90%.
The proposal outlines the development of several airstrips and short‑haul flight services intended to link remote hill districts with major metros, thereby facilitating tourism, trade and emergency services. Officials say the initiative aligns with the central government's goal of expanding air connectivity to underserved regions.
If approved, the funding structure would enable Himachal to fast‑track the construction of infrastructure such as runway upgrades, terminal buildings and navigation aids, without overburdening the state’s fiscal resources. The state government has indicated that the enhanced air network could generate significant economic benefits, especially for the tourism‑dependent local economy.
