Himachal Education Minister Rohit Thakur Says Degrees Should Lead to Skills and Jobs

Himachal Pradesh’s Education Minister Rohit Thakur reiterated that a degree should not be an end in itself but a pathway to practical skills and gainful employment. He highlighted the growing disconnect between higher‑education curricula and the state’s labour market, urging universities and colleges to redesign programmes that equip students with industry‑relevant competencies.

Thakur pointed out that the state’s youth are increasingly seeking jobs that demand specific technical abilities, and that merely awarding degrees without skill development risks under‑employment. He called for stronger collaboration between academic institutions and employers, as well as the integration of vocational training within regular degree courses.

The minister said the government is reviewing existing policies to ensure that skill‑based assessment and job‑placement support become integral to higher education. He urged stakeholders to adopt a results‑oriented approach that aligns academic outcomes with the state’s economic priorities.
