Helicopter Char Dham Yatra Debuts as “Saffron Chariot” in Uttarakhand

A new helicopter service dubbed the Saffron Chariot has been launched to offer pilgrims a more considered way to traverse Uttarakhand’s Char Dham circuit.
The state tourism department has introduced a helicopter service named the Saffron Chariot to ferry pilgrims across the four sacred shrines of Uttarakhand. The initiative aims to provide a streamlined, comfortable alternative to the traditional road trek, allowing devotees to cover the Char Dham circuit in a fraction of the usual time.
Operators will fly from designated helipads near the major pilgrimage points, linking Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. By reducing the need for long road journeys, the service is expected to ease traffic congestion on the narrow mountain highways that see heavy pilgrim traffic during the season.
The launch has been presented as a “more considered” approach, balancing the spiritual experience with modern convenience while also addressing environmental concerns associated with massive vehicular movement in the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.
