Heavy rains swell Ganga and Yamuna, flood alert issued across Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand

Continuous heavy rainfall across Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand has pushed the Ganga and Yamuna rivers to higher levels, prompting authorities to issue flood warnings.
The Indian Meteorological Department recorded intense rainfall over the past 24 hours in large parts of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, with several districts reporting more than 100 mm of precipitation. The deluge has caused the Ganga and Yamuna rivers to rise sharply, crossing critical thresholds in key monitoring stations.
State disaster management officials have declared a flood alert for vulnerable low‑lying areas, urging residents to stay vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel near riverbanks. Early warnings have been disseminated through local media, SMS alerts, and the national emergency app.
Pre‑emptive measures include the deployment of rescue teams, positioning of sandbags in flood‑prone zones, and readiness of relief shelters in districts such as Lucknow, Varanasi, Dehradun and Haridwar. Authorities continue to monitor water levels and will upgrade the alert if the situation deteriorates.
