Heavy Rains in Jalandhar-Ludhiana as Punjab Records 40% Below Normal Monsoon

Heavy rainfall struck the Jalandhar-Ludhiana corridor in the early hours, causing localized flooding and waterlogging in residential areas. The monsoon rains were reported to be unusually intense, with some parts of the district receiving over 80 mm in a single day. However, the state’s overall rainfall has fallen sharply, with the Meteorological Department recording a 40% deficit compared to the long‑term average for this period. Five districts—Mansa, Barnala, Patiala, Sangrur and Moga—are experiencing severe water shortages, impacting agriculture and daily life. State officials have deployed relief teams and are working to improve water storage and irrigation infrastructure to mitigate the effects of the drought.
