The India Meteorological Department has issued warnings of heavy rainfall in Kerala and Karnataka, while thunderstorms are likely in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and several other states.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) released a weather bulletin indicating that the southwest monsoon will intensify over the southern peninsula, bringing prolonged heavy rain to Kerala and Karnataka over the next 48 hours. Meteorologists attribute the surge to a low-pressure system moving eastward across the Arabian Sea, which is expected to dump significant precipitation across the Western Ghats and coastal plains.
In addition to the rain, the IMD warned of scattered thunderstorms in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and adjoining regions, driven by converging wind patterns and high humidity. These storms could produce strong gusts, lightning and localized flooding, especially in low‑lying urban areas and river basins.
