Heavy downpours on Dussehra day delayed the traditional Ravana burning ceremony in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh, disappointing families who had gathered to watch the event.
The annual Ravana Dahan ceremony in Khandwa, a town in Madhya Pradesh, was postponed after a sudden downpour drenched the venue on Dussehra. Organisers announced that the ritual, originally scheduled for today, will be conducted tomorrow once the weather clears.
Families, including a group led by Manish Gupta, had arrived early with children, hoping to witness the symbolic burning of the demon king. The unexpected rain forced the crowd to disperse, leaving many children disappointed as they headed home.
Local authorities confirmed that safety concerns and the risk of slippery grounds prompted the decision. The rescheduled event will follow the same program, with fire‑lighting and cultural performances expected to resume tomorrow.
The postponement underscores how seasonal monsoon patterns continue to affect public gatherings in central India, especially during major festivals.
Officials have urged residents to stay updated on weather alerts and to cooperate with security personnel when the ceremony is finally held.
