Heavy rainfall across Punjab has waterlogged paddy fields, leaving farmers waiting for the expected 1.5 million‑tonne harvest and markets nearly empty.

Heavy rain swept through Punjab this week, submerging large tracts of standing paddy and disrupting the crop’s growth cycle. The unexpected deluge has left fields waterlogged, raising concerns among farmers about potential yield loss.

Agricultural officials estimate that the season’s total paddy output could reach around 1.5 million tonnes, but the current conditions have stalled harvesting operations. Farmers across the state are now waiting for the water to recede before they can begin the lift‑off of the anticipated harvest.

Local mandis that normally handle paddy sales are reporting very low activity, as traders await the clearance of the fields. The slowdown in market transactions reflects the uncertainty caused by the weather event, prompting authorities to monitor the situation closely.

State agricultural departments have advised growers to adopt drainage measures where possible and to stay in touch with extension services for guidance on mitigating further damage.
