The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rain alert for the southern part of West Bengal, warning fishermen to return to shore due to rising water levels.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain alert for the southern districts of West Bengal, including Cooch Behar, Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri, effective from 6:00 a.m. today.

The alert warns of sustained rainfall exceeding 100 mm over the next 24 hours, which could lead to flooding along the riverbanks and coastal areas.

In response, local authorities have advised fishermen in the affected regions to return to shore and avoid venturing out to sea. Rescue teams are on standby to assist those who may be stranded.

Meteorologists predict that the heavy downpour will subside by late evening, but they urge residents to remain vigilant and follow official guidance.

The IMD has also requested that all maritime vessels in the area maintain a safe distance from the shoreline until the weather improves.
