Heavy Monsoon Rains Trigger Landslide Risks Across Hill Regions in Multiple Indian States

Intense monsoon showers have battered several Indian states, raising concerns over landslides in hilly areas as rainfall eases in Maharashtra.

The Indian Meteorological Department reported that monsoon activity has begun to wane in Maharashtra, where rainfall intensity has decreased compared to the previous days. However, the same weather system continues to unleash heavy showers across a number of other states, including Karnataka, Kerala, Gujarat and parts of the northeastern region.

These widespread downpours have saturated soils in the Western Ghats, Nilgiri hills and other elevated terrains, prompting officials to issue heightened alerts for landslide hazards. Local disaster management agencies have urged residents in vulnerable hill districts to stay alert, avoid unnecessary travel on steep roads, and cooperate with any evacuation orders.

Preliminary assessments indicate that the persistent rain could exacerbate existing erosion problems, especially in areas where deforestation and construction have weakened natural slopes. Authorities are monitoring river levels and ground movement closely, and have mobilised rescue teams in anticipation of possible incidents.

While no major landslide has been reported yet, the situation remains fluid, and the department will continue to update forecasts and safety advisories as the monsoon progresses.
