Health panel warns of new vector‑borne disease threat in India's Northeast

The National Health Advisory Panel convened this week to discuss a rising public‑health concern in the Northeastern states. Experts presented data showing that several vector‑borne illnesses, previously confined to limited pockets, are now being reported in new districts across Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh. The spread is attributed to changing climatic patterns, increased mobility and gaps in vector control programmes.

Panel members warned that diseases such as dengue, chikungunya and Japanese encephalitis could gain a foothold in areas that lack immunity and adequate medical infrastructure. They called for immediate strengthening of surveillance networks, rapid diagnostic capacity and community‑level awareness campaigns to curb mosquito breeding sites.

The advisory body also recommended that state health ministries allocate additional resources for vector control, including larvicidal spraying and distribution of insecticide‑treated nets in high‑risk zones. A follow‑up meeting is scheduled for next month to assess the implementation of these measures and to monitor disease trends across the region.
