Health Minister Inaugurates 42‑Bed ICU at SKMCH Muzaffarpur, Announces ₹112 crore Cancer Hospital Upgrade

Health Minister Nishant Kumar opened a new 42‑bed intensive care unit at SKMCH Muzaffarpur and disclosed a central government grant of ₹112 crore for expanding the hospital’s cancer facilities.
Earlier this week, Health Minister Nishant Kumar presided over the inauguration of a state‑of‑the‑art intensive care unit at the S.K. Medical College Hospital (SKMCH) in Muzaffarpur, Bihar. The facility adds a total of 42 beds to the hospital’s critical‑care capacity.
The new ICU comprises a 30‑bed advanced unit equipped with modern ventilators, monitoring systems and life‑support equipment, alongside a 12‑bed specialised ICU dedicated to cancer patients. Both sections are designed to meet national standards for tertiary care.
During the ceremony, the minister emphasized that the upgraded ICU will reduce the need for patients to travel to metropolitan centres such as Delhi or Mumbai for critical treatment, stating that local residents can now receive world‑class care within the state.
He also announced a central government allocation of ₹112 crore earmarked for the expansion of the hospital’s cancer wing, which will fund additional beds, diagnostic facilities and research infrastructure.
The inauguration is expected to strengthen Bihar’s healthcare ecosystem, improve survival rates for serious illnesses, and ease the burden on over‑crowded tertiary hospitals in larger cities.
