Five months after the Bandhwari landfill issue was raised, the state’s human rights panel has yet to receive the requested report, raising concerns over waste management oversight.
The Haryana State Human Rights Commission, set up to examine violations linked to the Bandhwari landfill, has reported that it is still waiting for the detailed assessment promised by municipal authorities. The request for the report was made in December, and the commission has now marked five months without receiving the document.
Officials from the commission said the delay hampers their ability to evaluate the environmental and health impacts on nearby residents, many of whom have complained of foul odour and water contamination. The panel had asked the Gurgaon Municipal Corporation to submit data on waste composition, mitigation measures and compliance with national solid‑waste rules.
Environmental NGOs have warned that the prolonged silence could exacerbate public health risks and undermine accountability. The commission indicated that, if the report is not furnished soon, it may approach the courts to compel the municipality to comply.
No official comment has been received from the municipal body as of the latest follow‑up, and the commission plans to reconvene next week to decide on further action.
