A strike by electricity workers has left Gurgaon without power for up to 16 hours, causing darkness in homes, water shortages and halted factories.

Gurgaon, a major industrial hub in Haryana, experienced a prolonged power outage lasting up to 16 hours on Tuesday after electricity department staff began a strike over pending wage demands. The disruption began in the early morning and affected residential colonies, commercial complexes and several manufacturing units across the city.

Residents reported complete darkness in their homes, while municipal water supplies ran dry as pumping stations lost power. Many office buildings and factories were forced to shut down operations, leading to an estimated loss of several crores in productivity for the day.

The electricity board confirmed that the strike was organized by the union representing line workers, who are demanding timely payment of arrears and better working conditions. Officials said they are in negotiations with union leaders but have not yet reached an agreement, and power restoration will depend on the outcome of those talks.

Authorities have urged citizens to conserve remaining electricity and avoid non‑essential usage until supply can be fully restored. The situation remains fluid, with the board monitoring the strike developments closely.

The incident highlights the vulnerability of the region’s industrial ecosystem to labor disputes in essential services, prompting calls for a more robust contingency plan to mitigate future disruptions.
