A dispute between temple trustees and a dominant priest group turned violent at the Sant Karu Baba temple in Mahishi, Saharsa district, leading to a shooting that injured a villager and a separate assault injuring another person, with police recovering three weapons.
Police say a clash erupted at the Sant Karu Baba temple in the Mahishi area of Saharsa district after a disagreement between the temple's trust committee and a group claiming dominance over ritual offerings. The confrontation escalated when shots were fired, striking a local villager who was rushed to a nearby health centre for treatment.
In the ensuing melee another individual sustained injuries from a physical altercation. Both victims are reported to be residents of the surrounding villages and are receiving medical care.
Law enforcement officials arrived at the scene, detained several participants and seized three firearms believed to have been used in the incident. An investigation has been launched to determine the motives behind the dispute and to identify all parties responsible for the violence.
Temple disputes over management and control of religious rites have periodically surfaced in the region, but the use of firearms marks a serious escalation that authorities are treating as a criminal offence.
