In Guna, a shopkeeper-convict was exposed after shopkeepers set a trap, catching him in the act of using edited PhonePe screenshots to defraud local traders.
In the city of Guna, a man named Ashu Rajput was caught using fabricated PhonePe transaction screenshots to deceive shopkeepers into purchasing expensive dry fruits and groceries.
The shopkeepers, who had noticed irregularities in the transaction proofs, set a trap by presenting a genuine transaction receipt and monitoring the suspect’s reaction.
When Rajput attempted to show a counterfeit UPI screenshot, the shopkeepers confronted him, and local police were called. He was taken into custody at the Guna police station.
Police officials said the investigation will look into whether the scam extended beyond Guna and whether other victims were affected.
The incident has prompted shopkeepers in the region to verify UPI transactions more rigorously before accepting payments.
