The Gujarat government announced that the Uniform Civil Code will come into force once the detailed rules are officially notified.
Gujarat's state administration confirmed that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will become operational after the government issues the requisite rules. The notification, expected to be released in the coming days, will mark the first time the code is enforced in the state.
The UCC seeks to replace personal laws based on religion with a common set of civil statutes governing marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption. By moving to a uniform framework, the state aims to promote gender equality and legal uniformity.
State officials said the rule‑making process has been completed and the notification will be published in the official gazette. Once notified, the provisions of the code will apply to all residents of Gujarat, irrespective of their faith.
Legal experts note that the implementation will require administrative adjustments, but the government has expressed confidence that the transition will be smooth. The move is being watched closely as a potential model for other states.
