The Gujarat government has issued an order requiring private schools to follow the state reservation policy for all recruitment, with penalties for non‑compliance.
Gujarat's education department issued a directive that private schools must implement the state's reservation policy when recruiting teaching and non‑teaching staff. The order aligns private institutions with the same caste‑based reservation percentages that apply to government schools.
The circular specifies that schools failing to adhere to the prescribed quotas will face monetary penalties. Initial violations can attract fines up to Rs 5 lakh, with higher amounts for repeat offences.
Officials said the measure aims to promote equal opportunity and address concerns about under‑representation of scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and other backward classes in private education.
The department will monitor compliance through periodic audits, and schools have been given a short deadline to adjust their recruitment processes accordingly.
