A Gujarat livestock inspector demanded a Rs 22,000 payment to exempt cattle during the Diwali period and was apprehended by authorities.

The Gujarat state livestock department said an inspector approached a farmer seeking a payment that would allow the animal to be exempted from routine checks during the Diwali festivities. The official allegedly quoted Rs 22,000 as the amount required for the exemption. The request was recorded by the farmer, who later reported the incident to local police. Law enforcement officials detained the inspector shortly after the complaint was filed. The department has opened an internal probe and warned that any officer found guilty of corruption will face strict disciplinary action under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The case has been registered as a criminal offence and will be pursued in court.
