Since 2022, Gujarat courts have handed out 908 life sentences and 16 death penalties in Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) cases, Deputy CM Harsh Sanghavi said.
Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi disclosed that Gujarat’s judiciary has imposed 908 life sentences and 16 death penalties in cases covered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) since the year 2022.
The figures, announced during a press briefing, reflect the state’s intensified focus on safeguarding children and ensuring stringent punishment for offenders. POCSO, enacted in 2012, mandates severe penalties for sexual offences against minors.
Sanghavi emphasized that these numbers demonstrate the judiciary’s commitment to upholding the law and protecting vulnerable children. He also urged continued vigilance and cooperation between law‑enforcement agencies and the courts to curb child sexual abuse.
The Deputy CM added that the state would continue to monitor the implementation of POCSO provisions and support victims through rehabilitation programs.
