The District Magistrate of Greater Noida has filed a petition in the Supreme Court contesting a High Court ruling that criticized her handling of a police report concerning the detention of a student activist by the National Security Agency.
The District Magistrate of Greater Noida, Medha Roopam, has taken the case to the Supreme Court after a High Court judgment criticized her for not applying due diligence to a police report that led to the detention of a student activist by the National Security Agency (NSA).
The High Court, in its order, described Ms. Roopam’s conduct as setting an example that could deter others from exercising their right to freedom of speech and expression in public spaces, particularly in support of labourers.
The student, whose identity has not been disclosed, was detained following a protest organized by a labour union in Greater Noida. The detention sparked debate over the balance between public order and civil liberties.
The Supreme Court has accepted the petition and is expected to schedule a hearing in the coming weeks, marking a significant legal test of the district magistrate’s authority and the rights of student activists.
