India’s government has decided to delay the introduction of a 0.4% fee on UPI payments exceeding ₹2,000, following earlier announcements that the charge would be implemented after Diwali.

The Ministry of Finance had earlier announced that a 0.4% fee would be levied on UPI transactions above ₹2,000 to curb excessive digital payments.

The fee was scheduled to take effect after the Diwali festival.

In a recent statement, the government has put the move on hold, citing concerns about consumer backlash and the need for further stakeholder consultation.

The decision comes amid growing scrutiny of the UPI ecosystem and calls for clearer regulatory frameworks to balance innovation with consumer protection.
