The central government has postponed a final ruling on the new University Grants Commission regulations, stating it needs more time while not confirming whether the rules will be withdrawn or retained.
New Delhi – The Union government announced today that it will take additional time before taking a definitive step on the recently introduced University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations. While the ministry said the matter is under further review, it did not commit to either scrapping the rules or keeping them in force.
The UGC guidelines, rolled out earlier this year, have sparked protests from several universities and student groups who argue that the provisions could curb academic autonomy and affect funding mechanisms. Critics have called for a complete withdrawal, whereas some academic bodies have urged the government to retain the core provisions after amendments.
With the decision deferred, the existing regulatory framework remains unchanged, leaving institutions in a state of uncertainty. Officials indicated that consultations with stakeholders will continue, and a final announcement is expected in the coming weeks.
The ministry’s spokesperson emphasized that the pause is intended to ensure a balanced approach that addresses both the concerns of the education sector and the government's policy objectives.
