The Union Government has sanctioned a ₹5,600 crore scheme aimed at enhancing cotton productivity across India.

New Delhi – The Centre has cleared a ₹5,600 crore Cotton Productivity Mission designed to raise cotton yields and farmer incomes nationwide. The scheme, approved by the Union Cabinet, will be funded through the central budget and is slated to run over the next five years.

The mission will channel resources into research and development of high‑yielding seed varieties, precision irrigation, and integrated pest‑management practices. It also earmarks funds for capacity‑building programmes that will train farmers on modern agronomic techniques and post‑harvest handling.

Implementation will be overseen by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare in partnership with state agricultural departments and research institutions such as the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. Officials project a 15‑20% increase in cotton output by 2030, which could translate into higher earnings for millions of cotton growers.

The initiative aligns with the government's broader goal of doubling farmers' income and reducing reliance on imports of cotton inputs. Senior ministry officials said the mission will also strengthen the domestic textile value chain by ensuring a steady, quality raw material supply.

Stakeholders, including farmer unions and industry bodies, have welcomed the announcement, noting that the financial outlay reflects a long‑term commitment to reviving India's cotton sector.
