Gopalganj Floodwaters Recede, Residents Face Mud, Stench and Rebuilding Challenge

After floodwaters withdrew in Gopalganj, Bihar, families are confronting mud‑laden streets, foul odours and the task of rebuilding ruined homes.

Heavy rains earlier this week caused the Kosi tributaries to overflow, submerging large parts of Gopalganj district. By Thursday the floodwater had largely receded, leaving behind a landscape of silt and debris.

Nevertheless, the retreat has not brought relief to the affected households. Many homes remain structurally compromised, with walls cracked and roofs collapsed. Streets are coated in thick mud, and stagnant pools emit a strong, unpleasant smell that hampers daily activities.

Health officials have warned that the contaminated water poses a serious risk of water‑borne diseases such as diarrhoea and cholera. They have urged residents to avoid drinking untreated water and to use boiled or chlorinated supplies wherever possible.

The district administration has begun distributing clean‑water kits, disinfectants and temporary shelter materials. Officials also said a detailed reconstruction plan will be drafted in the coming days, but the process is expected to take weeks.

As families start to return to their damaged houses, the community braces for a prolonged period of repair and rehabilitation, hoping that swift government support will mitigate the long‑term impact of the disaster.
