The Katni marble producers in Madhya Pradesh are set to begin the Geographical Indication (GI) registration, following a directive from the district collector after industry demands.
Katni’s marble, renowned for its distinctive patterns and durability, is now moving toward formal Geographical Indication (GI) registration. The move aims to protect the product’s unique identity and prevent misuse of its name in domestic and international markets.
In response to repeated appeals from local traders, the district collector has ordered the creation of a Katni Marble Association and instructed it to initiate the GI application process. The association will compile the necessary documentation, including evidence of the marble’s historic link to the region, and submit it to the GI Registry.
If granted, the GI tag is expected to open new export avenues, enhance price realization for artisans, and provide legal safeguards against counterfeit products.
