Berlin confirmed a €1.3 billion assistance package for Ukraine while CDU leader Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv, where the city was under artillery fire.

Berlin’s foreign ministry disclosed a new aid package worth €1.3 billion for Ukraine, signalling continued German support for Kyiv’s reconstruction and defence needs. The announcement came as the German government seeks to reinforce its commitment to European security following Russia’s invasion.

On the same day, Friedrich Merz, the leader of Germany’s Christian Democratic Union, landed in Kyiv for a high‑level visit. Merz met President Volodymyr Zelensky and senior officials to discuss the implementation of the aid and broader cooperation between the two nations.

Merz’s arrival coincided with active shelling in parts of the Ukrainian capital, underscoring the volatile security environment. Despite the danger, the delegation proceeded with the talks, highlighting Germany’s willingness to engage with Ukraine even under fire.

The €1.3 billion package is expected to cover both humanitarian assistance and military support, though exact allocations were not detailed in the statement. Analysts view the move as a reinforcement of Western backing for Ukraine as the conflict enters its second year.
