The Gandak River in Muzaffarpur rose to 55.20 m on Wednesday morning, exceeding the 54.42 m danger mark by 78 cm and causing floodwater to flow into the police station compound.
The state disaster management agency recorded the Gandak River’s water level at 55.20 metres on Wednesday morning in Muzaffarpur, Bihar. The reading is 78 centimetres above the officially designated danger mark of 54.42 metres.
The rise has already forced floodwater into the premises of the Muzaffarpur police station, prompting officials to cordon off the area and relocate sensitive equipment. Nearby villages in Paru and Saraiya blocks are also reporting increased inundation after the earlier impact in Sahebganj.
Local authorities have issued an advisory for residents in low‑lying zones to remain vigilant and be prepared for possible evacuation. Relief teams have been mobilised and sandbags are being distributed to vulnerable households.
Meteorological forecasts suggest that the river could maintain high levels through the weekend, depending on upstream rainfall. Officials are monitoring the situation closely and will update the public as conditions evolve.
