The Gopalganj district administration has issued an alert over a possible rise in the Gandak River’s water level, citing a potential glacial lake outburst flood in Tibet, and officials have inspected vulnerable zones.
The district administration in Gopalganj, Bihar, has placed the region on alert after receiving reports that the water level of the Gandak River could rise. The warning is linked to a possible glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) in the upstream Tibetan region, which could increase river flow downstream.
An Assistant District Magistrate (ADM) handling disaster management, together with the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO), visited the most vulnerable stretches along the river. Their inspection focused on checking embankments, early‑warning systems and the readiness of local relief teams.
Authorities are now closely monitoring the river’s gauge readings and have advised residents in low‑lying areas to stay prepared for any sudden surge. No evacuation orders have been issued yet, but the administration has urged the public to follow official updates and cooperate with emergency crews if required.
