The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has taken regulatory action against Nestlé’s infant formula for breaching marketing norms, prompting comments from a nutrition expert.

New Delhi – The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) announced that it has initiated enforcement measures against Nestlé India’s infant formula products after finding violations of the agency’s marketing guidelines. The authority said the infractions pertained to promotional practices that could influence caregivers’ choices in ways not permitted under existing regulations.

An independent nutrition expert, speaking on a live broadcast, said that strict adherence to marketing norms is essential to protect vulnerable infants and to maintain public confidence in fortified foods. The expert cautioned that any misleading claims could undermine breastfeeding promotion and lead to inappropriate product use.

FSSAI officials indicated that the case will be examined further and that corrective actions, including possible recall or modification of advertising material, may be imposed. The development underscores the regulator’s heightened scrutiny of infant nutrition products in a market where parental trust is paramount.
