The town of Boko in Assam has launched free training programmes to revive traditional cane and bamboo crafts, aiming to empower local artisans and create livelihood opportunities.

Local authorities in the town of Boko, Assam, have rolled out a series of free skill‑training workshops focused on traditional cane and bamboo craftsmanship. The initiative, announced this week, seeks to preserve the region’s age‑old hand‑looming and carving techniques while providing artisans with modern market‑ready skills.

The training modules cover basic material preparation, weaving, carving, and product design, and are conducted by experienced craftsmen who have inherited the craft over generations. Participants, drawn primarily from nearby villages, receive hands‑on instruction and access to tools and raw material at no cost.

Officials say the programme aims to generate sustainable livelihoods by linking trained artisans with local cooperatives and online marketplaces. By revitalising these indigenous crafts, the effort also hopes to attract tourism and bolster Assam’s cultural economy.

Early feedback from trainees has been positive, with many expressing confidence that the new skills will enable them to produce higher‑value items and reach broader customers. The training schedule will continue for several weeks, after which a showcase exhibition is planned to display the participants’ creations.
