The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has rolled out a free registration program for 50 lakh residential properties, commencing today across the country. The move is part of a broader effort to digitise land records and provide legal security to homeowners.
Under the scheme, owners of unregistered houses can submit their documents at local revenue offices without any fee. The primary beneficiaries are low‑ and middle‑income families who previously faced high costs and bureaucratic delays in obtaining title deeds.
Patwaris, the village-level revenue officials, will play a key role in verifying documents and updating the land records database. The government has promised to streamline the process by deploying mobile registration units in remote areas.
However, the policy does not yet clarify how disputed land titles will be resolved. Experts say that without a clear mechanism for adjudicating conflicts, some owners may still face challenges in securing their registrations.
