A former Maharashtra minister announced that families hit by the Latur drought will receive a full year’s salary as relief, aiming to ease their financial distress.

Latur district, which has been grappling with a prolonged drought, received a new relief promise on Monday. A former state minister declared that each family affected by the water shortage will be paid a monthly salary for an entire year, a measure intended to provide steady income during the crisis.

The announcement was made during a local gathering of community leaders and farmers, who have been urging the government for more substantial support. While the exact amount per family was not disclosed, the minister said the scheme would be funded through private contributions and existing state relief funds.

Officials from the district administration said they would coordinate with the minister’s office to identify eligible households and begin disbursement as soon as the financial framework is finalized. The move comes amid growing concerns over crop failures and rising unemployment in the region.

If implemented, the salary scheme could set a precedent for targeted relief in other drought‑prone areas of Maharashtra, where seasonal water scarcity continues to threaten livelihoods.
