Veteran Goan politician Warren Alemao has switched allegiance to the Indian National Congress, vowing to oppose the BJP's rule in the state and tackle corruption.

Warren Alemao, a former minister and senior figure in Goa's political landscape, announced his entry into the Indian National Congress on Thursday. In a public statement, Alemao said his decision was driven by a desire to confront what he described as the BJP's authoritarian governance and pervasive corruption in the state.

Alemao, who previously held portfolios in the state cabinet, criticized the current administration for failing to address key issues such as unemployment, infrastructure deficits, and alleged misuse of public funds. He pledged that, as a Congress member, he would work to restore transparency and accountability in Goa's governance.

Political analysts note that Alemao's move could reshape the opposition dynamics ahead of the next state elections, potentially strengthening the Congress's foothold in a region where the BJP has been in power since 2017. The former minister also hinted at mobilising grassroots support to challenge the ruling party's policies.

The Congress party welcomed Alemao, with senior leaders highlighting his experience and local influence as assets for the party's campaign strategy in Goa. No immediate response was recorded from BJP officials.

Alemao's switch underscores the fluid nature of state politics, where party affiliations often shift in response to evolving public sentiment and strategic calculations.
