Former Chief Justice Ramesh D. Gavai warned that maintaining strict judicial discipline is essential as the Rajasthan High Court faces a controversy over alleged procedural lapses.

Former Chief Justice Ramesh D. Gavai, who served as India's chief justice from 1999 to 2000, addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding the Rajasthan High Court, emphasizing that the credibility of the judiciary hinges on strict internal discipline.
The controversy erupted after reports surfaced alleging procedural irregularities in the appointment of a senior judge, prompting criticism from legal circles and calls for an inquiry. Gavai cautioned that any perception of bias or laxity could erode public trust.
He urged the Rajasthan judiciary to adopt transparent mechanisms, regular peer reviews, and swift corrective action against misconduct. Gavai also appealed to the Supreme Court and the collegium to monitor compliance with ethical standards.
The remarks were made during a panel discussion organized by the Indian Bar Association in Jaipur, where legal experts debated reforms to strengthen accountability within the courts.
