Food Safety Rules Exist, but Non‑Compliance Remains Biggest Issue, Says Mundhe

Mundhe told India Today that while food safety regulations are in place across India, widespread non‑compliance hampers their effectiveness.
Mundhe, speaking to India Today, emphasized that a comprehensive framework of food safety regulations currently governs the production, processing and sale of food items in India. He noted that the legal provisions cover standards for hygiene, labeling, additives and permissible limits for contaminants.
Despite the existence of these rules, Mundhe highlighted that non‑compliance by manufacturers, retailers and street vendors remains the most pressing challenge. He pointed to frequent lapses such as inadequate sanitation, false labeling and the use of prohibited substances, which undermine consumer protection.
The official called for stricter enforcement, regular inspections and greater awareness among stakeholders to bridge the gap between regulation and practice. He urged state authorities to allocate more resources for monitoring and to impose penalties that deter violations.
Mundhe concluded that only through consistent compliance can the intended benefits of the food safety regime be realized, ensuring safer meals for Indian consumers.
