A culinary expert explains that while both idli rava and uppittu rava are derived from wheat, their processing and preparation methods differ significantly, clearing common confusion among home cooks.

Food experts have clarified a common misconception about two staple ingredients used in daily cooking: idli rava and uppittu rava. Both are derived from wheat, but their processing and preparation methods are entirely different.

The confusion arises because both products are referred to as “rava” and are made from wheat. However, the milling process, the degree of grinding, and the subsequent preparation steps vary between the two.

Experts pointed out that idli rava is typically ground into a finer powder and is often used in fermented batter for idli, whereas uppittu rava, also known as bunsi or suji, undergoes a different milling process and is used in a distinct type of preparation.

Understanding these differences helps home cooks select the appropriate ingredient for their recipes and ensures that dishes are prepared as intended.
