Floodwater Recedes in Assam Village, But Boats Still Rule Roads

In Delihi Gohain village of Sivasagar district, Assam, floodwater has begun to recede, yet roads remain submerged and villagers rely on boats for daily travel.
Heavy monsoon rains in late June and early July triggered widespread flooding across Assam, with the Brahmaputra and its tributaries swelling beyond capacity. Delihi Gohain, a small village in the Sivasagar district, was among the hardest hit.
While the water level has begun to drop, the village’s main thoroughfares remain underwater. Residents report that the only way to reach nearby markets or health facilities is by boat, as motorised vehicles cannot navigate the submerged lanes.
The continued isolation has hampered the delivery of essential supplies and disrupted schooling. Many families are also worried about the risk of waterborne diseases as stagnant water lingers.
Local authorities have set up temporary shelters and are coordinating with the Assam Disaster Management Authority to clear debris and restore road connectivity. Residents await the final clearance of the floodwaters before normal life can resume.
